Medical transcription is a medical language specialty, a distinction that has led to an alternative title for the qualified medical transcriptionist — medical language specialist. This is a process, which deals in converting the voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians or other healthcare professionals into text format.

A medical language specialist who interprets and transcribes dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding patient assessment, workup, therapeutic procedures, clinical course, diagnosis, prognosis, etc., in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of healthcare services.” The documents that are commonly transcribed include History and Physical examination, Office Notes, Pathology Reports, Radiology Reports, Laboratory Reports, Operative Reports, Autopsy Reports, Consultation, etc. These reports have to be very accurate, as they form the corner stone for the patient’s health care. A medical transcriptionist may also be required to maintain other records relating to evaluation of equipment, inventories of hospital equipment, keeping record of daily work charting, printing, delivering medical reports, providing administrative support, and training, etc.
